Yio Chu Kang Swimming Complex started its operations in 1986. It was managed by Singapore Sports Council then. Now, Sports Singapore.

Address

202 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 9, Singapore 569771

History

The swimming pool was managed by Swimming pool supervisor Mr Chan Kee Cheng who was a competitive swimmer under Mr Ang Teck Bee’s tutorage who produced 50m World record champion, Mr Ang Peng Xiong. The pool was quiet when there wasn’t a MRT station, Peoples’ association club house and Nanyang polytechnic. The pool mainly serve the residents of Ang Mo Kio and the workers of the nearby semi conductor factories then. Swimming classes then were chaotic with 40 students in 1 class with the swimming pool like a war zone. Today the numbers dropped to a mere 8 students to 1 class.

Present

Time flies, 35years later, today, new government housing estates had emerged over the years. Although the nearby famous SSDC driving center is no longer nearby, so is the famous bak chor mee in the nearby market, the new north south high way is now in the making. The swimming pool now is also uniquely constructed with a man -made beach volleyball area with sand. The members of the grassroot club can also access the pool area by the club’s exit. There is also a preschool incorporated from the use of the previous canteen’s area. Overall, the space of this swimming complex is huge. Definitely a great place to swim and relax after a hard day at work! It is also a great place to have swimming lessons as the place is huge and conducive for taking up swimming lessons.
